ABOUT
Gulf Coast Marine, L.L.C.
Founded in 1964 by Dieter Max Hugel, Gulf Coast Marine started out as the dream of a young man from Germany. After more than 55 years of his stewardship, his son Dieter Michael Hugel is now President and CEO. Gulf Coast Marine is a family owned and operated managing general agent and wholesale broker that continues to serve the Gulf South as it has for many years.
Gulf Coast Marine offers many benefits as a managing general agent with our delegated underwriting authority and longstanding past as a wholesale broker. We have an exclusive arrangement with our London broker, Howden Specialty, for the placement of marine coverages for assureds who cannot find coverage elsewhere. In addition to our wholesale brokerage services, we are proud of our delegated authority for underwriting Hull and Machinery as well as Protection and Indemnity coverages with our domestic pool of insurers.
Our Management
Dieter has worked at Gulf Coast Marine for more than thirty years. Since 1988, he has worked as an underwriter for the company and took over as CEO in 2021. Dieter has an extensive knowledge of the ocean marine insurance industry that is shown from a longstanding body of work. He not only leads the company but is also the Director of the Underwriting team.
Phil is the head of our Accounting Department and serves as Gulf Coast Marine's CFO. His accounting and finance expertise helps to maintain the financial health of the company and assist in all of our dealings with the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
Dan has helped assist people with their claims needs for more than fifty years. Thirty of those years have been with Gulf Coast Marine. Dan is the lead person within our in-house claims department. He and his team work diligently on behalf of the assured and the companies that we represent.

Donna has worked for Gulf Coast Marine for over forty years and has been on the underwriting team for more than fifteen of those years. She graduated from the University of New Orleans and earned her CPA designation during that time.

Dieter, Jr. recently graduated from Southern Methodist University, and he becomes the third generation of the family to be a part of Gulf Coast Marine.
